Adelaide Food and Wine Festival
You know how it goes. A relaxing afternoon or evening, a few friends, great conversation, a bottle (or two) of wine and before you know it, you’ve agreed to trek the Kokoda Trail, canoe down the Murray in the Murray Marathon – or host a food and wine festival! That’s more or less how it went for Amanda James Pritchard one evening a few months back, resulting in a select bunch of Adelaide food/wine/media types gathering last night in the delightful upstairs room of Apothecary 1878 to celebrate the launch of the Adelaide Food and Wine Festival, 6-14 April 2013.
Honouring South Australian food and wine and it’s passionate producers at each of the 31 events, the festival kicks off with a sit-down, long table sharing feast at the iconic Adelaide Central Market hosted by 891 ABC‘s Michael Smyth with a menu using local produce sourced from the market traders and designed by Hilton Adelaide‘s Dennis Leslie. Thereafter follows a line-up of food and wine indulgences in venues all around the city and it’s surrounds with events ranging from chocolate to bacon and all points in between.
But the fun and the food celebration isn’t limited to the city, with the festival climaxing in a day toasting the food and wines of the beautiful South Australian regions. Pack up the car and head to the Adelaide Hills, the stunning Clare Valley, The Barossa Valley, the Riverland, McLaren Vale, the Coonawarra, Langhorne Creek or Kangarilla for a taste of regional bounty and a dose of fresh country air. I’ll be attending the Clare Valley event at their gorgeous new restaurant, Terroir, with a local menu designed by chef Dan. Join me at a locavore lunch with the female farmers of the region who will be there to share their farming experiences with you and to field some questions about the future of food production – it promises to be a great day.
