Stornoway in the Outer Hebrides – A safe Harbour in the Stormy North Sea

A small town with a rich maritime history, Stornoway on Lewis has not forgotten the herring girls upon whose hard work a successful fishing industry relied.

Last night I happened on a television show about the Outer Hebrides. The beautiful photography of this amazing region took me right back to our visit there earlier this year and reminded me of our stay in Stornoway.

Historic Housing on Lewis – The Uniquely Preserved Arnol Blackhouse

The Arnol Blackhouse is a carefully preserved example of a much-loved way of living that was once common in the Hebrides, but has now totally vanished.

For hundreds of years the people of Lewis lived under the same roof as their animals in the winter months, in what are known as blackhouses, the ruins of which dot the landscape of this windswept island.
