January is one of the hottest months of the year here in Adelaide. It’s usually around this time of the year that I’m to be found recumbent in a darkened room, under the gently swishing ceiling fan, whining about the heat and languidly waving away any requests from the ravenous family for me to attend kitchen duties.

In a burst of unseasonable weather, it’s been raining up here in the hills. Normally that  would be cause for happiness, but at this time of the year cherry producers really don’t want rain as too much moisture on an almost ripe crop will split the fruit.

I know one shouldn’t do this, but I frequently experiment with my new recipes on unsuspecting dinner guests. This may or may not put you off if I invite you for a meal but, in my defense, I’ve never had to throw the dinner out and order pizza. Neither have I had any gastric disasters that I’m aware of, although my friends may just be too polite to say.

Orange, Honey & Walnut Spice Cake – A-Cake-a-Week

Here’s the thing. I’ve just discovered a serious flaw in my cake-a-week plans. Not that I can’t get around to baking once a week, or that the troops let me down with the consumption of a cake a week – no, we’re all good there! My problem is blogging time. I’ve realised that if I blog once a week about cake it cuts into the time I have to blog about other food – and there is so much food to talk about!
