The start of a new month means it’s time to announce a new book for the next one – and for these stressful times the cookbook club April selection is all about comfort.
Hello again my fellow cookbook tragics, I can’t tell you excited I am for you to discover the wonderful food and food writing of Claudia Roden this month – March 2022 – in Lambs’ Ears Cookbook Club. Her cookbook, The New Book of Middle Eastern Food is our selection for March, but any of the earlier editions of this cookbook will be just fine.
As I suspected, you’ve been very taken with Annabel Langbein and I’m pleased to have been able to share her wonderful food with all of you. I’m afraid I’ve been MIA a little over the last week or two as fate shot yet another arrow my way, with my husband having to undergo sudden and extensive spinal surgery, but I’ve certainly been admiring all of your wonderful photos and meals.
With the beginning of a new month it’s also time for the announcement of a new book for the next one, and the cookbook club April selection will make all of the bakers in the club very happy indeed.
The Comfort Bake is the latest publication by Sally Wise, a living legend of home cooking in Tasmania and the author of many bestselling cookbooks. According to another Australian food legend, Matthew Evan, Sally is “Tasmania’s favourite nan” because of her popular cooking school in the Derwent Valley. This woman is a one-person education system, also running cooking demonstrations and teaching locals, tourists, prisoners, young adults, children – anyone – how to turn simple ingredients into comforting meals.
For many of us baking is the perfect antidote to stressful times, and as I write this the world is staring down another significant and frightening challenge. In these times baking can provide a double (or triple) dose of solace – first there is the contemplative mindfulness of the act itself, then there is the joy of a delicious, buttery prize at the end and the joy of sharing that prize with others around the table, or simply giving it away entirely.
You won’t need any fancy equipment or specialist skills for the recipes in the foolproof cookbook club April selection recipe collection – these are bakes that are big on comfort and low on fuss. And it doesn’t just cater to those among us with a sweet tooth. In The Comfort Bake you’ll find a generous selection of savoury classics sitting proudly alongside a glorious line-up of sweet treats.
This is a brand new cookbook, only being released on March 1 2022, so you may struggle to find it on the shelves at the local library – but what’s the fun of being in a cookbook club if you don’t make the occasional therapeutic purchase?
