Forget about stale, supermarket spices – visit the new Gewurzhaus in Adelaide and discover how fresh spices should really taste.

Gewurzhaus in Adelaide

If there’s one thing that makes a huge difference to your cooking and baking it’s the quality of your ingredients. That’s doubly important when it comes to spices, and that’s why I’m so thrilled that we finally have our own Gewurzhaus in Adelaide.

Located at Stall 43 in the Adelaide Central Market, Gewurzhaus finally opened in Adelaide some weeks ago, and I can’t tell you how thrilled I am about that. I’ll never forget accidentally stumbling across their store in The Block  Arcade  in Melbourne some years back – and looking back, I suspect I went a little crazy. I certainly made quite a dent in the credit card that day. Since then, I’ve made it a point to visit their Melbourne store whenever I was able to, and had scheduled a major shopping expedition there earlier this year. Well, I think we all know what happened with that. ?

I adore cooking and baking with spices, so Gewurzhaus in Adelaide is absolutely the happy place for me. It is the brainchild of two Melbourne sisters who began the business inspired by the fragrances they remembered wafting from the kitchen of their German grandmother. The Gewurzhaus range includes more than 350 single-origin spices, herbs, salts, peppers, teas, sugars and unique blends,  which are milled and mixed fresh weekly, from whole ingredients, right here in Australia. They also stock a range of incredibly useful kitchen accessories, storage options and all sorts of things I didn’t know I couldn’t live without.

But their core business is flavour, and the quality and freshness of their spices is exceptional. You have no idea what a difference using top quality, fresh spices will make to your cooking until you try them – honestly, you’ll be amazed at the intensity and depth of the flavours. Try my Orange, Honey and Walnut Spice Cake with their spices and see what I mean!

While Gewurzhaus in Adelaide is a small space, it really is perfectly formed. As a family business, it’s a great fit for the Adelaide Central Market, and their personalised service is exceptional. If you can’t find something to inspire you here then you’re simply not trying – there are free recipe cards, plus loads more recipes on their website, and the staff are full of suggestions and ideas. If you’ve been looking to take your cooking to the next level, then this is absolutely the place to begin.

christmas gifts

And at this time of year, it’s totally the one-stop-shop for Christmas gift inspiration for the foodies in your life. They have the most gorgeous selection of imported Christmas treats, as well as gift packs of spicy favourites, or you can make up your own gift selection. And I’d challenge anyone to come away without just a little extra something for themselves. Or is that just me?
