It’s almost halfway through November, with it’s lengthening days and warmer evenings, and that means we are skipping, all frocked up and with tinsel in our hair, inescapably towards the party season. Increasingly, my favourite way to kick off the celebrations is to head to the Southern Vales wine region for Gorgeous 2014, the fab Fleurieu food and music festival, being held on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 November. (Sorry, I know alliteration should be avoided, but I’m cheap like that.)
The befittingly named Gorgeous Festival has developed over the years (see here and here) and is McLaren Vale’s big celebration of great food, wine and music. As it did last year, the festival begins on Friday evening and goes through until Saturday night, but this year there is a whole new focus on food with the Friday night consisting of a stunning new shared table event. Three local chefs – Karena Armstrong of The Salopian Inn, Peter Reschke from d’Arry’s Verandah and Tom Boden of Ellen Street Restaurant at Maxwell’s winery – and three Adelaide chefs – Paul Baker from the Botanic Gardens Restaurant, Phil Whitmarsh of The Daniel O’Connell and Stewart Wesson from The Flinders Street Project – will together present a fabulous shared feast, the Gorgeous Table Dinner.
Gorgeous has always boasted a very strong connection with local Fleurieu food and wine producers, but this innovative step takes the collaboration one step further. Each chef will contribute a unique dish as part of a three course shared platter style dinner and Karena Armstrong says it will be exciting to see what the group creates. “Each of these chefs has fantastic credentials and a well-earned reputation so guests are sure to be impressed with the quality and creativity of each dish,” Karen said. Diners will also be entertained by live music, including ex Powderfinger guitarist Darren Middleton, but this particular part of Gorgeous will be a ticketed event and all seats MUST be pre-booked. Seats at this table are limited, so I’d get in quickly if you’re keen.
On the Saturday the focus will be more squarely on the music (although there will be plenty of local food available, so you won’t go hungry) with a super-chilled line up over two stages and which includes Australian roots favourites Xavier Rudd, The Waifs and The Beautiful Girls among a heap of others. As last year, again, there are camping facilities across the road for those who choose to stay the night and check out the local Fleurieu food and wine scene for themselves over the weekend.
This year the Gorgeous folk have given me one double pass for the very special shared table event on Friday 28 November (value $310) and one double pass for the exciting Saturday 29 November line up (value $230) for my lucky readers to win.
