Welcome to the Hive – Buzz Honey Has a New Adelaide Hills Home

07/09/2015 by Amanda

Local food producer Buzz Honey launches a new retail outlet & visitors experience right in the heart of the Adelaide Hills.

Buzz Honey launch new premises

Earlier this year I introduced you to Buzz Honey, a local honey producer and passionate South Australian foodie. What I didn’t mention in my last post about them was the very humble and modest premises from which they were operating. Annette and her staff have been pumping out significant Australian and export orders while at the same time trying to woo other international purchasers from what was basically a large tin shed, with no facilities for the public to have the chance to see what they do – but this week that all changed.

On Thursday I attended the launch of Buzz Honey’s new ‘Hive Door’ at Mt. Barker Rd, Totness (just next door to Prancing Pony Brewery) and what a step up in the world it is!

Much like her tiny, industrious, workers, Annette gives off a buzzing, tireless energy and I get the impression that this is a woman who, unlike me, sees no attraction in a quiet afternoon on the sofa with a book and the remote control. The launch of these new premises sees the realisation of three significant goals for her. This fulfills her dreams of expanding production to keep up with a growing demand, sharing her love of bees by providing educational facilities and a working (contained) beehive on the premises and offering a place for customers to try her selection of seasonal honeys, learn about pairing them with local cheeses and relax with a coffee or tea and some locally made treats.

Annette has already partnered with another popular Adelaide Hills business, cheese makers Udder Delights, offering a take-home tasting pack of carefully paired honeys and cheeses and I’m hopeful of an interesting partnership at some stage down the line between Buzz and next-door neighbours Prancing Pony Brewery – but I guess we’ll have to wait and see!

In the process of realising this dream, Annettte and her family have created another, very attractive reason for tourists – both local and visitors – to take a drive up to the Adelaide Hills. Buzz Honey is the perfect addition to the already popular Adelaide Hills tourism offerings of wineries, boutique breweries and food producers who can be accessed less than a 30 minute drive from the centre of the city.

Besides providing some delicious honey, I can see how this business is also contributing to ‘global food security’ through their bee production- plus, I’ll take some of that delicious Udder Delights cheese, please!

Bees are such fascinating creatures, is wonderful to see them at work. I hope these new facilities bring many new customers and visitors!

A great idea to pair up, especially seeing how complementary the two brands are.

I love the ‘hive door’ idea! I would really like to know more about bees and this would be a fun visit.
