February in Lambs’ Ears Cookbook Club

31/01/2024 by Amanda

February is usually the hottest month in Australia, so February in Lambs’ Ears Cookbook Club celebrates the sunny food of Bill Granger – an Australian self-taught cook who showcased our cuisine to the world.

February in Lambs' Ears Cookbook Club

Hello cookbook addicts everywhere and welcome to February in Lambs’ Ears Cookbook Club. I was thrilled to see so many of you join in, during your holidays no less, for the January cookbook, Kindred. I’ve been even more thrilled to see how you’ve already embraced the whole-year cookbook, The Food Saver’s A-Z. As I mentioned in my last post, this is a book that I felt deserved more attention, so I’m glad to see our clever cookbook club members stepping up to check it out.

After my request for input in the Facebook group, I’ve gladly taken on board some of your suggestions for our future cookbook selections.

I had already announced that for February in Lambs’ Ears Cookbook Club we will be cooking from ANY of the late Bill Granger’s recipes – from his books or online. It’s a great idea to explore the entire canon of a cookbook author, and I can’t think of a better tribute to someone who made such an impact on Australian food.

Several of you expressed a desire to explore more vegetarian options, so that will be coming up soon too.

What Did We Cook In January?

While a lot of the dishes in Kindred are more on the ‘hearty’ side, there’s plenty of fresh, seasonal, tasty recipes that we can enjoy on our summer tables – here’s just a few that our members chose to share.

Jan Session’s plum compote from Food Saver’s A-Z

Kindred’s classic German apple cake from Carmel Demery

Fantastic Silesian potato dumplings by Chloe Haseltine, from Kindred

I can’t go past cake – ever – and this pistachio and chocolate gingerbread from Fiona Blampied looks amazing!

So – Tell me About March

In your replies for cookbook suggestions, there were several mentions for Recipes For A Lifetime of Beautiful Cooking by Danielle Alvarez and Libby Travers. This is a gorgeous book, and one that is worth quietly browsing over a cup of tea. As Danielle says “This collection of recipes is designed to offer flavours and textures that are easier to achieve at home than in a restaurant …”, so it seems to me that it’s the perfect cookbook for our March selection.

Grab your copy in the next few weeks, or head to your local library – and don’t forget to check out the ebook version. These are a great option and, when used on an iPad or tablet, are in full colour.

But for February in Lambs’ Ears Cookbook Club we are going to celebrate the wonderful food of Bill Granger. I’ll be revisiting his Australian Food, a book I reviewed back in 2020. His recipes are summer on a plate – just what we need for our hottest month.

So grab some avocados and go for it!

So far, 2024 is looking a little like this –

The whole year cookbook is The Food Saver’s A-Z – The Essential Cornersmith Kitchen Companion by Alex Elliott-Howery and Jaimee Edwards

February – Any recipes from the late Bill Granger, either from his books or online
January – Kindred by Maria and Eva Konescny

YOU CAN BUY ANY OF THESE COOKBOOKS AT ALL GOOD BOOKSHOPS, OR ONLINE AT BOOKTOPIA USING THE LINKS IN THIS POST. (IF PURCHASED VIA THESE LINKS, YOU WILL GET A GREAT PRICE AND I WILL RECEIVE A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF THE COST.)

Details for last year in the cookbook club are all here.
