April was a big cake month in the cookbook club, and we’ll have lots of fun in May with Italian month! And do read on for June’s cookbook selection.
Is it just me, or is anyone else alarmed at the speed at which this year is flashing past their eyes? I barely got anything baked from April’s Lambs’ Ears Cookbook Club cookbook, and here it is already May and Italian month!
We worked from two cookbooks in April – “First Cream the Butter & Sugar” by Emelia Jackson, and “Strong, Sweet and Bitter” by Cara Devine (links to books are below). Both books struck a chord with various members, and a great deal of cake came out of the cookbook club kitchens. Here’s just a few photos of some heavenly creations. Head to our online group to feast your eyes even more.
Cocktails from Chloe Haseltine
Gooey, crunchy Lumberjack cake from Sonali O’Connor
Coffee walnut streusel cake from Julie Vey
It’s Italian month now for the cookbook club and our cookbook author this month is quite the package. She’s Italian, a bit glam, performs on stage and screen, is an opera singer, and has a film-star husband – but she’s also quite grounded and can cook up a storm. The Italian Home Cook by Silvia Colloca, is certainly not her first rodeo. She’s authored six cookbooks, and has co-created, co-produced and hosted four television shows.
Anyone who has seen her tv shows will know her obvious joy in food, friends and family, as she enthusiastically shares the authentic and simple food that has been passed to her by her mother and grandmother. The dishes in this book are approachable, family-oriented and delicious – it’s the perfect book for Italian month.
Our June cookbook is something a little different and is one I canvassed the club members about before choosing. Modern Pressure Cooking by Catherine Phipps will take all of your reservations and fears about pressure cooking and turn them completely around. The food is, as the title suggests, modern, tasty and economical, and brings the pressure cooker well and truly into the 21st century.
I’ve been referring to it regularly for some months now and am thrilled with the confidence it’s given me in using an appliance I was – quite frankly – terrified of.
Anyway, join us for Italian month at Lambs’ Ears Cookbook Club – it’s going to be mouth-watering fun!
