A dramatic example of Gothic Revival architecture, the interior of the Notre-Dame Basilica is one of the most glorious I have ever seen. The ceiling is richly decorated in blue and gold and the church is full of intricately carved statues.Tucked away in the historic Old Montreal part of town, there has been a church on this site since 1672. The church was designed by James O’Donnell, a Protestant New Yorker who converted to Catholicism on his deathbed – possibly to ensure that he could be buried in his creation. Construction work was begun in 1824, but the intricate and detailed interior work on the church was not finished until much later and it is now a listed National Historic Site of Canada.
