The city of Fes was founded in the 9th century and is the third largest city in Morocco. It was once the capital of Morocco and, while that honour now belongs to Rabat, this city is still felt to be the spiritual heart of the country. The ancient walled city – the medina – is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and houses the oldest, continuously functioning madrasa in the world. The medina is a mysterious and confusing maze of narrow lane-ways and alleys where life and trade goes on much as it has done for centuries, with families living in the same houses and streets for many generations. We took the safe route and went in accompanied by a guide. If we hadn’t, I suspect we would still be wandering around in there.

It’s amazing how ancient it all is and how generations of families all stay in the one home their entire lives! xx
