Surprisingly, Sydney-based master pâtissier Jean Michel Raynaud grew up in a French home where food was not a particular passion. In fact, his father was utterly floored when he announced his intention to leave school to become a pastry chef and it was not until he emigrated that he realised just how important food was to French culture.

The image above is a picture of innocence, isn’t it? Fresh, home-baked brownies and a wholesome glass of milk – hardly the stuff that leads down the road to ruin. Unless, of course, one knocks of the whole batch of bourbon brownies in one sitting as I was in very real danger of doing.

If there’s one thing that makes my heart beat a little faster it’s a new cookbook, so you can imagine how pleased I was to get home from my travels and find two of them in the post waiting for cookbook reviews from me! The first is from a very reliable favourite of mine, Annabel Langbein, and the second from someone new to me, the vegetarian cook Anna Jones.

While I’m reluctant to air all of my shortcomings as a cook – and there are quite a few, believe me – I’ve decided to come clean on something that I’ve felt a little guilty about for some time. I’ve waxed lyrical about the comforts and joys of baking before on this blog and I’ve been up front about my fondness for cake, but I’m lazy.
