It’s Mad March here in Adelaide and everyone is up to their eyeballs in Adelaide Festival, Adelaide Fringe and WOMADelaide theatre, comedy, dance and music. But here in South Australian food and food culture is never far from our minds and the program for the brilliant Tasting Australia 2017 was also launched right in the midst of all this performance culture.

Tasting Australia 2017 is taking place from April 30 to May 7, with its eight days to showcase South Australia. The festival will feature a range of events celebrating Adelaide’s status as a Great Wine Capital. Guests will have a chance to get to know internationally and nationally noted chefs like world’s best female chef Ana Ros, lion of the culinary world Marco Pierre White, Paul Carmichael(Momofuku Seiobo, Sydney), Clayton Wells (Automata, Sydney), Mitch Orr (ACME, Sydney), Victor Liong (Lee Ho Fook, Melbourne) and Lennox Hastie (Firedoor, Sydney).

This year there will also be a focus on clustered events in South Australian regions, with visitors invited to explore the state’s many food bowls throughout the festival. We have some amazing food producing regions, many within a drive of the city of Adelaide, and I’ve picked out a few of my favourites to help encourage you to get out and see a bit more of our great state.

One of South Australia’s favourite holiday spots is the Yorke Peninsula, ‘Yorkes’ to the locals. You can combine a weekend of seaside fun with events like the fabulous Feast on Yorkes – a fair-like event showcasing local food and wine at Barley Stacks Wine, or Coopers & Crabs, a four course dinner celebrating one of the region’s most loved culinary rituals; Blue Swimmer crab and cold beer.

Heroines Table at the Salopian Inn

Head down to the famous Fleurieu Peninsula for Heroines Table, a thought-provoking dining experience at one of South Australia’s leading regional kitchens, The Salopian Inn. Popular Sydney chef and Maggie Beer alumna Alex Herbert joins Tasting Australia ambassador Karena Armstrong at the pass and diners will listen to a panel of speakers including Analiese Gregory (Bar Brose, Sydney), Sue Bell (Bellwether Wines) and Michelle McColl (Kalangadoo Organics). They’ll be celebrating and discussing the role of women in the modern culinary world.

Meet Riverland wine and food producers at These Hands, a three-course lunch whose menu reflects the abundance of organic and local produce from the Riverland. Presented by Eric and Jenny Semmler of 919 Wines and their friends at Singing Magpie Produce, this is your opportunity to gain a connection with the Riverland, hearing stories of local history and production first-hand from the producers.

There are plenty of other regional experiences to enjoy, in these regions and also in the Barossa Valley and the Adelaide Hills. Check the Tasting Australia website for the full program.

I’ll be checking out some of the regional events, but not sure exactly which ones yet Lorraine. Unfortunately, I can’t be everywhere at once!
