The Harem is a section of the private apartments of the Turkish sultans in the beautiful Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. It housed the sultan’s mother, wives, concubines, children and their staff, with each hierarchical group having it’s own quarters grouped around a courtyard. This section of the palace is extensive with many rooms, most of which are not open to the public even now. The decoration of the whole palace is richly coloured using ornate tile-work, screens and fountains. This is just a section of the lavish adornment found all through the royal apartments.

Oh I loved Topkapi Palace. It was a highlight. I enjoyed the mosque too but there were just so many interestingthings in the palace and the history stretched over such a long period. The gardens below it were lovely too. Only small but when we were there (probably around this time of year) the tulips were out. Thanks for another great post Amanda.

Beautiful! I will admit I’ve always been curious about a harem. Maybe I was in one during a previous life? LOL
